“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” — Mahatma Gandhi
Having grown up in Shishukunj I have learnt a lot about the projects that we support all over the world. After completing my degree I decided to go travelling and to volunteer at some of these projects. As my first solo volunteering experience this has been a very enjoyable trip, combining volunteering with sightseeing, local festivals and cultures. For me it has been a unique experience where I had the chance to really live in traditional Indian culture, surrounded by really nice people andto meet inspirational baalako who are able to give you more than what you give them.
It was lovely to have flexibility with Shishukunj International Foundation (SIF) being very accommodating in my requests. From the first correspondence to the end of my visit, I receive lots of information, support generously and kindness. Not only did SIF arrange accommodation, transport and sightseeing visits to local areas but also took the time out of there busy work to ensure I managed to visit multiple projects that Shishukunj support e.g. Dhanvantri School, Happy Faces School, Gram Swaraj Sangh, Nilpar & Shishukunj Day Care and Residential School, Bagasara. It was so nice to meet baalako from all of these schools as it helped me really to connect with the projects. Growing up I had only heard and seen photos of the impact that Shishukunj was making but this gave me the chance to see it first-hand. The SIF Team are role model karyakars for Shishukunj, they are professional, friendly and loving.
Working with the Shishukunj International Foundation (SIF) paarivar was the thing that probably changed me on my trip. Initially I was very nervous but I can honestly say that they became part of my family and our friendships have developed ever since. They made sure I was fully settled and made sure I grabbed every opportunity with open arms. One of the projects I was involved with was at Shishukunj International School Bhuj. Not only was I involved with spending time with the balaako but also I learnt more deeply about the organisation. I made loads of new family members at the school and still keep in contact with them. The thing I am most proud of is introducing a SIS Newsletter which is still running. This encourages baalako to be more creative and fun doing it. I love still getting involved as much as can despite being back in the UK.
After 8 months back in the UK I went back to visit everyone which was a very nice experience. I cannot wait to visit everyone again later on this year.
